MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE 17th JULY 2024
MINUTES FOR THE MONTHLY PUBLIC MEETING OF THE
NEW KILLARNEY-RIVIERA ASSOCIATION
HELD VIRTUALLY OVER THE INTERNET
ON WEDNESDAY 17 JULY 2024 at 18H30
PRESENT: Wayne Ford (Killarney Village); Charles Whyte (Beverley Heights); David Spencer (Brenthurst Court); Taqiya Adam (Bretton Woods); Ayodeji Phillips (Killarney Park); Leon Mare (Castlerosse).
1. WELCOME
- Wayne opened the meeting and welcomed the attendees.
2. APOLOGIES RECEIVED
- Ismail Randeree (Castlerosse)
3. DISCUSSION OF TIME CONSTRAINT
- We will try to keep the meeting to one hour if possible.
4. CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES, AND MATTERS ARISING
- The minutes of the previous meeting have been circulated to all attendees, and have been approved by them. The details thereof were incorporated into the monthly newsletter.
5. STATUS OF OUR SUBURB, AND LIST OF ISSUES REQUIRING ACTION
- Street and pavement repairs: The repair project will cost R23,000 per truckload of asphalt. The meeting resolved to purchase one truckload, and we will see how much we can fix with that. Further projects can be undertaken thereafter if needed. In addition we will continue to pressure the JRA to do repairs, in particular the large and dangerous hole in Anerley Road.
- The new community upliftment initiative is cleaning up garbage, litter and weeds on the motorway embankment along 7th Street. They are doing unbelievable work, and they are adding huge value to our neighbourhood. They need more volunteers to help them, and it also helps if complexes could second their complex gardeners and janitors for a day if possible. They are obtaining quotes to fix that boundary security fence, and they are also undertaking various fundraising efforts.
- Repainting the street names on kerbs: Charles is working with Clinton from Biarritz to get this started. Clinton will do a few kerbs around the Biarritz vicinity, and we will learn from that experience.
- Illegal hawkers and drinking on pavements: The Mall has installed a security camera to watch over the taxi area. We can buy a “caravan” to be used by the CPF as a mobile police station, but it will cost R30,000, and there is concern about the potential effectiveness thereof.
- We are seeking a quote to install an additional PZT security camera in 1st Street.
- The Castlerosse camera is watching over the 7th Street car park. It was suggested to install solar lights at the 7th Street car park to help with security at night. Running power cables across the road would be almost impossible, so either we need to put the lights on the Castlerosse building, or we need to use solar lights. Various solar options will be considered and researched.
- We again stress the on-going risks of cell-phone snatching and pickpockets operating on the pavements. All buildings re asked to continually warn their residents and visitors.
- Electricity outages: These are due variously to damaged cables, cable thefts, transformer repairs, and failures at sub-stations. It was agreed that we need a better source of “live” information, as the current City Power system is not working. We will ask the Ward councillor to follow up and help to identify an appropriate senior person at City Power, along with their contact details.
- Killarney Mall refurbishment progress: There has been little visible progress to date. Two petitions have been launched to help speed up the Mall’s processes. We are also arranging a meeting with the Mall’s owners, as soon as possible.
- We will send a letter to the Pick ‘n Pay head office, informing them about the pickpockets and beggars in their Killarney store, as well as our various other concerns.
- NEW ISSUES
- It was noted that the homeless person who has been living for years on the corner of Oxford Road and Riviera Road, seems to have moved away. However he has left before and returned, so we will keep an eye on that corner.
- Contact details of the available government Homeless Shelters will be circulated.
The meeting was closed at 19h32, with thanks to all who participated.
